Pre-Kindergarten News

Dear Families,

WOW, what a busy couple of weeks we have had since being back from mid-winter break! We had lots of fun celebrating the 100th day of school – I will try to send pictures very soon. March 2 was Dr. Suess’ birthday and the internet is full of wonderful activities for us to do here in PreK. Dr. Suess was a pioneer who wrote 40 of the most interesting and engaging book for children. The rhyming is great for literacy development and the characters stimulate wonderful imaginations. Many of the children told me they have these books at home – great, keep reading them! If you do not have any, I encourage you to add them to your library.

On Friday morning, we made and tasted green eggs and ham after I read Dr. Suess’ book Sam I Am. I was not surprised to hear that not everyone liked them (bright green eggs can be intimidating), but everyone enjoyed cracking an egg and watching them being cooked. We needed to go to music class, so we waited until Monday to make our own Sam I Am books. We explored rhyming words like box/fox and house/mouse. They drew pictures to help them remember the story so they can “read” it to you later. Please ask them to show it to you when they bring it home.

In the afternoon, we visited the lunchroom for an hour of crafting, game playing and book reading with other students in K-4th grades hosted by Ms. Romero. She LOVES Dr. Suess! I hope you saw some of the pictures the students colored. Here in PreK we read Oh, the Places You’ll Go! and created amazing hot air balloons using oil pastels. So much fun! They are decorating our bulletin board, so you will see them next week.

This week we are exploring the letter Cc. Think cats, cows, Hungry Caterpillar and carrots. Your children are getting better at working independently so I have time to work 1:1 with each of them. Patience – it is a virtue! Today I sent home LOTS of worksheets and crafts we have completed. Many are from last fall as I saved different things as evidence for our accreditation. The visit went very well, so I am sending EVERYTHING home for you to enjoy. Please ask your child to look at it with you as a review.

As you know, we have entered the season of Lent. During this time, many families donate money through Rice Bowls. We sent one home for you last week. This is a great way to show your child how to donate a few coins to help disadvantaged families throughout the world. There is a flier with the box that will help guide you as you teach your child about the program. We also participate in collecting thirty pieces of silver here at St. Mads. Judas was paid thirty pieces of silver for turning Jesus over to the authorities. We remember this by having each child collect thirty coins to be donated to our sister school in Guatemala. We ask you to reward your child with coins for the good things they do throughout Lent. On the Wednesday before Easter, April 17th, the children will learn about the people their donations will help and we will collect the coins and rice bowls.

Have you sold all of your raffle tickets yet? I still need to get to work on mine! The Gala is April 6th and we need to get the tickets in as soon as possible. Please be sure to read the auction information and sign up to help wherever you are able. I will be in charge of setting up the silent auction again the evening before, so please come help me and preview the items up for bid. We would love to have you attend the event, but I have found it just as much fun to volunteer to help for the evening. The best part is that you are able to bid on items even if you are “working.” Yemin Huang (aka Emily’s mom) and I are working on a wonderful art project you are all going to want to have to remember this special time in your child’s school career. Be sure to reserve your tickets to the event on our website today!

Next Thursday, March 14th, we will celebrate St Patrick’s Day a little early. Please send your child to school in their finest green. I enjoy having fun that day in the classroom, so please be sure to ask your child for details! On Friday, March 15th our students will not have class, so the teachers can have an in-service day. We will meet to finalize plans for the rest of the school year and work on our catechistical certification.
